Man shot self with nail gun

The man found Friday on the side of the Palisades Interstate Parkway with a bleeding chest wound had just attempted suicide, state police said yesterday.

He had shot himself in the upper body with a nail gun, State Police Sgt. Kevin Flynn said.

Flynn, from Troop F in Haverstraw, would not identify the man's name, age or address, saying the information was unavailable to him.

The man, who witnesses described as being in his early 30s, was first taken to Nyack Hospital and later to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. His condition was unavailable yesterday.

About 5 p.m. Friday, Flynn said, the man parked his car in the area — perhaps at the Anthony Wayne Recreation Area or at the bookstore and visitors center — and went into the nearby woods to take his life.

Flynn said the man was depressed, but added that he had had no further information. The investigator with details of the case would be unavailable until today, he said.

Bleeding from the chest and in obvious pain, the man walked toward the side of the northbound PIP to find help.

Patricia Nafz, who was driving home from her job at Camp Venture in Nanuet to her home in Orange County, spotted him.

Nafz, director of a home that cares for older, developmentally disabled people, said she had often seen hikers resting in the area, which is part of the Appalachian Trail, but that this scene was different.

"He put his hand up in the air as if to signal," said Nafz, adding that the man was also clutching his chest and rolling around on the embankment.

After pulling over and going toward him, he told her he was hurt.

Nafz, a former emergency medical technician, said he had blood on his chest and a hole — off center, a little to his right — in his shirt.

The man went in and out of consciousness, could barely speak and was grimacing in pain, Nafz said.

State police arrived 10 minutes later and closed both northbound lanes south of Exit 17, the entrance to the Anthony Wayne Recreation Area, to investigate.

Some drivers ended up sitting in traffic for about an hour.

"Whenever we get something like that, we have to secure the scene right away so we can determine what happened," Flynn said.

Rockland Paramedics treated the man at the scene and the Stony Point Ambulance Corps took him to Nyack Hospital, even though a Medevac helicopter had been called to airlift him.

From Nyack Hospital, the man was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center.
